Tennis Cup 5

The Tennis Cup 5 was a Youtube Poop tennis tournament that took place between June 16, 2023 and August 7, 2024. The 20th tennis tournament overall, it was the first tennis competition of the standard cup variety in over a decade, following the Tennis Cup 4 in 2012, and the fourth and final tournament of the YTPMania era. As the YTPMania forums themselves were seeing almost no use in this era, this event ended up being the biggest source of its site activity through its duration, and was otherwise run mostly over on The Tennis Isles. This was the third of three tournaments to use the voting account "tournamentacc", described by mrdoognoog as "almost entirely utilitarian" due to Smonge, YTPMania's owner, having a strictness about alt accounts and the "lapse of YouChew knowledge" regarding the community's past history with being more playful with these accounts.[1] The tournament's eventual winner was infinitysnapz.

In subsequent years, the Tennis Cup 5 has been retrospectively seen as a low point in tennis history. With the presence of absolutely no elder players in the community during this era, some have regarded this as an event where technical proficiency with effects took precedent above all else in the matches that occurred, with the players advancing the farthest being those who took visual editing to its absolute maximum height. Exterior software such as Blender saw very prominent usage, with an extensive focus on massive-in-scope deployment of 3D visual effects across rounds, an approach that has come to be referred to with occasional derision as "Trapezoidium" from 2024 onward. Many players from this tournament have also reserved feelings regarding their negative experiences from it, relating to a combination of performance expectations, percieved requirements to gain respect, and the pressure of having to do so within deadlines. infinitysnapz, the winner of this tournament, has also become increasingly critical of his performance, considering it to have intensified harmful precedents regarding the already prevalent generalizations within tennis:

"i do realise that alot of my popularity and respect comes from the fact that i was the right person in the right place, pushing visual boundaries in just the right way, doing crazy stuff nobody had ever seen before. my TC5 rounds blew alot of minds - and yet.. before 2022 nobody really knew who i was. admittedly, "trapezoidium" is partly responsible for this. the problem is that people think that is the Only way to become popular, which i think is really bad actually. you should not have to learn 3d effects to become popular. if everyone was to copy these 3d effects, the landscape would be very flat and boring. what was once super-impressive becomes a common boring sight, and we would all converge onto the same style, which would be terrible. i suppose to sum it up, i think there is only so much that can be done with blender before the novelty wears off." -infinitysnapz, April 14, 2025

Multiple tennis veterans would return to the community right as this competition ended, which would set the stage for the tournaments that were to follow, in addition to the community's YellowTealPurple era.

This is the first tennis competition to feature slabsten84, KCZ1, InfernAl_Toad, Yottifferent, atomic_glitch, Diolary478, BLΛCKFLΣX, Retired Arc, rjnjrn, arayoru, cashlost2, False Flesh, BluMndy, uncool_memes, piotrek117, greenboy, DisorganizedDweller and Mask9999, and the final tennis competition to feature Dozzyrok. No participants from the Tennis Cup 4 returned.

Set 1

ApproximateOstrich vs. GnarpyFan4000

This was the first match to complete, taking just 2 days, 13 hrs and 47 minutes to go through all 6 rounds- before many matches even started. Whilst this isnt the fastest match to be played in a tournament, it is still notable for being near the top of that list. Despite the players having very good chemistry, the match was criticized for its low effort.

InfernAl_Toad vs. KCZ1

mrdoognoog vs. Yottifferent

This match starred mrdoognoog's cat, who unfortunately passed away shortly after the match was finished. As a result, doog's round 5 (that she starred in) was privated for quite a while, but was since restored.

Brick vs. atomic_glitch

VidTens443 vs. Diolary478

BLΛCKFLΣX/Dozzyrok/Retired Arc vs. AngryLuigi23

This match is notable for having a different player for each odd round.

YooY vs. rjnjrn

arayoru vs. cashlost2

False Flesh vs. BluMndy

False Flesh's serve uses "Five per cent per nothing" by Yes.

nm41 vs. RaymanChrome

uncool_memes vs. piotrek117

infinitysnapz vs. Gabiwoda

This match went for a "spooky", horror-based theme

gXYZ vs. system128

lonrefne vs. Letycjusz S.

Even though this match completed, lonrefne dropped out, giving Lety the automatic win.

BortLoco vs. DisorganizedDweller

Gabrielpika vs. Mask9999

Set 2

slabsten84 vs. InfernAl_Toad

While InfernAl_Toad won the match, prior demotivation to continue the tournament caused them to drop from further matches, giving slabsten the win.

Brick vs. mrdoognoog

The main focus of this match was about all things King Crimson; in particular, many references to Robert Fripp.

The final round uses a variety of Analog Distortion effects throughout. The "finale", to the ending sequence of "Larks' Tongues in Aspic Part II", used a TV broadcast of the entire match up to that point sped up, displayed on four screens, all in a circle. A camera was placed in the middle and spun around with a Lazy Susan, rapidly speeding up until cutting to black.

AngryLuigi23 vs. VidTens443

cashlost2 vs. YooY

False Flesh vs. nm41

piotrek117 vs. infinitysnapz

system128 vs. Letycjusz S.

This match focused on Touhou.

Gabrielpika vs. BortLoco

This match predominantly used The Upside Down Show as its main source. The last round was notable as BortLoco modded many elements of the previous round into a Mario Kart map; then played through the whole thing. While being one of the most unique rounds of the entire tournament, it didn't land him the win as Gabrielpika moved on to set 3.

Set 3

mrdoognoog vs. slabsten84

This match only went three rounds.

  • mrdoognoog's serve was very unorthodox; it revolved around a repeated scene of the Sea Elebit boss fight from Elebits, as well as the tractor chicken scene from Footloose.
  • slabsten's serve continues these ideas, adding some of their own. Some added sources include asdfmovie.
  • round 3 had a pretty interesting effect; a cube was rendered out in frames, then traced with the "wiggle art" program to make a cool 3d outline.

slabsten dropped out after round 3, giving doog the automatic win.

YooY vs. AngryLuigi23

infinitysnapz vs. nm41

This match was themed around The 8-Bit Guy and other youtubers - Both players have an interest in retro technology, and shared injokes, resulting in strong chemistry, and a memorable match overall.

system128 vs. Gabrielpika

Set 4

Neither match of this set went all the way through.

infinitysnapz vs. system128

This match didn't get very far, as system128 dropped out shortly after the tournament began. It was intended to be a semi-successor to the finals of Doubles Cup 4, with alot of sources in common, as well as callbacks. The match is intended to be resumed as a segment within the non-tournament match between these two players.

AngryLuigi23 vs. mrdoognoog

This match was themed around the video game Pizza Tower. mrdoognoog dropped out before finishing round 6 due to not having the time to finish (or move forward in the case of a win).

Set 5

AngryLuigi23 vs. infinitysnapz

The final match of this tournament took place between April and August of 2024 - several months after it should have ended - with college and life getting in the way, some argued that this match should have never happened. Regardless, it continued anyway, and concluded to critical acclaim.

The overall theme of this match was mario, game-development, and Michael Rosen, evolving into 4th-wall breaking pursuit of 'logic'
