Windows Movie Maker Master

The Windows Movie Maker Master (also known as Windows Movie Master or WMMM was a specialized Tennis Tournament hosted by strong414bad and DaftPunkYoshi on the YouChew forums that involved a classic Cup-style procession of matches with the twist of Windows Movie Maker, long derided as a primitive and simplistic program in this era, being the only editor players could use. The event ran from April to November of 2009 and overlapped with the then ongoing Tennis Season and the starting stages of the Grey Tennis Tournament. A few of the players who joined were ones that hadn't played in tournaments before specifically because WMM was their main editor and finally felt they had a place where they would be the most fairly matched. One such player, DaftPunkYoshi, who was already building a reputation for his impressive technicality with the famously derided editor, would be the winner of the Tournament with much praise; the first time an active member of the Tennis Café Staff would win and the first time that a tournament would be won by its host (or in this case, one of its hosts). Because the tournament was organized and planned out like the Tennis Cup, it is retrospectively looked at now alternatively as the "Tennis Cup 2", to keep in likeness with the logic of the Tennis Cup 4's name, though it is still commonly referred to under its original title. A special award set was created solely for this tournament, for participants and the winner, and was not used again.

This would be the first tennis competition to feature DaftPunkYoshi and Emperor Ing, and the only tennis competition to feature almightyseancore and Rarenut59.

Background

In August of 2008, Emperor Ing instigated a three-way all WMM match with fellow WMM users and Tennis Staff members strong414bad and NS2, which was an acclaimed match among the tennis regulars upon its completion. It used an unusual format of round orders, doing so in a way that no player would volley each other twice, but every player would be volleyed once. This match would become widely known and coined by Ing as the "Windows Movie Master", a title also informally bestowed upon each of the three participants.

In April of 2009, the formation of a second Windows Movie Master was instigated, in what would have originally been a gigantic multi-way match with several players, estimated to be up to 16. It wasn't until about a week after its original formation that it was decided between strong414bad and DaftPunkYoshi to turn it into a full out Tournament, with a total of 16 players competing. It would initially keep it's name of the "Windows Movie Master II", in order to refer to the original match that took place, though it has since been referred to commonly as just the Windows Movie Master. It's official start date was withheld until the Doubles Cup 1 officially ended, which would be about one and a half months later.

Unusually for a tennis tournament up to this point, the determination of matches fell back from the randomization used from the Tennis Cup onward and instead opted for a traditional bracket system, where the outcomes of the first lineup would define the matches of the following Lineups, thus making it more stylized after a real-life Cup. The only randomized lineup of matches would be for the first Set, determined by DaftPunkYoshi.

A running theme throughout this tournament was the repeated invoking of CD-i sources into matches, initially spurred on by Emperor Ing in the first set, and being seen for a good amount of the competition's first half. Due to the negative connotations made by the greater YTP community against CD-i YTPs edited in Windows Movie Maker at this time, this could be seen as the tennis community's way of creating a clever subversion of this stereotype. Emperor Ing himself was well known to make videos in this way at the time as one of his notable signatures.
