The Tennis Staff Multiway is an ongoing tennis chain that began on May 25, 2009. The concept behind it was for it to be exclusive match played only by the Tennis Staff on the original YouChew Forums. Originally started as a giant multi-way match between the active staff of the time, it soon become part of a "rite of passage" tradition, where new rounds largely became made by the most recent additions to the staff as sort of a celebration of their promotion. Even so, any member of the staff past or present can volley, with second volleys being contributed by RAKninja and strong414bad. The match has continued following Youchew's closure, extending to the Tennis Staff of YTPMania, with the most recent round being by dani_phantump on April 2nd, 2020.
"A legendary tennis match as old as time. Or, at least, as old as 2009. This decade long match and counting has long been written in stone by the Fucks of old and through successive generations of time and staff turnover. It weaves a multi-directional, evolving narrative of the warrior CHEN, born from the serve of the fabled Moogle, who has lived to survive 15 grueling tennis rounds of absurdity, complexity, humor, music, and NINJAS, which have been and continue to have been served only by those who have been presently or previously chosen by the Golden Bunny Breasted Racquet of Servitude, now represented equally by the Silver Racqueted Shield of the Knights of Justice (“We Don’t Care Who You Are, We’re Ready To Meet You”). CHEN The Warrior is themselves never seen until the fabled TheChutley's Round 15, but their immediately recognizable Battle Cry has pierced the heavens and cut through every tennis round gauntlet they have found themselves faced with, aided with by the awesome strength of their mighty weapon, The Incredible Laser Sword. Truly, nothing can stop The Warrior CHEN. In short, This is The Tennis Fuck Story. A theoretically endless multi-way in which only café staff may volley."
-dani_phantump, in the OP of the YTPMania continuation thread[1], October 22, 2019 (revised as of the YellowTealPurple continuation thread[2] created on July 19, 2025
dani_phantump's Round 18 precipitated a five-year hiatus for the match due to VidTens443's protracted progress as the original intended creator for Round 19, the longest gap of time experienced for the match thus far. On July 19, 2025, the current staff members along with a small group of former ones organized plans for the chain to officially continue, with TheChutley taking over in VidTens' spot. Enough subsequent spots were then confirmed and/or taken to allow the match a clear path towards Round 30.
Round 2 of this match, Crash2991's "Want Me to Play With the Very Fabric that is Your Life?"(2009) was one of the 33 Round 2's sampled in GameBop's "Seconds, Anyone?"(2010), their serve for their match with Sploltoen and MycroProcessor in the 3-Way Tennis Tournament.
Layout
The match is your average chain, however many of the in-jokes and references pertain to the history of the staff themselves. Rounds are sometimes claimed in advance, and members can claim as many rounds as they want; however usually they only do one or two to allow space for others to participate, whether incoming or otherwise.
Originally the match was planned to go to about 30 total rounds, with a proposed volleying order being "Moogle vs. Crash2991 vs. RAKninja vs. theHappyFungus vs. Emperor Ing vs. RabbitSnore vs. strong414bad vs. GameBop vs. MycroProcessor vs. DaftPunkYoshi vs. NS2". While NS2 showed enthusiasm for contributing to this match, he never ended up making a Round 11 like originally planned, which eventually became RAKninja's second volley. Almost every round that has been submitted to the match since (with the exception of strong414bad's Round 14) has been by a newly added member of the Tennis Staff.
Nuthead and NS2 are the only two members of the original staff to have not made a volley, although sources signature to them both were used in RAKninja's Round 3 and ChrisGendo's Round 12 respectively. Other members of staff who have not contributed to the match include trepmaws, CorruptionSound, Metroid998, LaVie CestLol, Biodegradable, VidTens443, as well as all staff appointed after dani_phantump.

Round 1
"What, you want me to play with your tail?", by Moogle
Moogle's nearly 5 minute serve, uploaded on May 25, 2009, utilizes many different sources associated with the different members of the active Tennis Staff at the time of its making, along with many of Moogle's usual stylistic flourishes. These include:
Touhou Sources (Moogle) including the skit "Yakumo Chen - Security Training" of the 2nd Touhou M-1 Grand Prix[3]
Norm Augustinus (theHappyFungus)
Ninja: Silent Assassin (RAKninja and Emperor Ing)
Final Fantasy X (Moogle)
Bono's World AIDS Day Promo (strong414bad)
Kukori Es Kotkoda (GameBop)
Ralph Bakshi's Lord of The Rings(1978)(Emperor Ing)
Higurashi When They Cry (NS2 and theHappyFungus)
The Chrono Trigger Anime pilot (Crash2991)
Metal Gear Solid (NS2 and RabbitSnore)
Myst (MycroProcessor)
Also included is a segment containing much of the original conradslater vs. Misselaineous10 match sped up and treated with various color effects. In respect to the rest of the match's company, the serve edits all of these different sources in a mostly classic-based humor style, to leave room for any directions desired to be taken.
Round 2
"Want Me to Play With the Very Fabric that is Your Life?", by Crash2991
Crash's Round 2, uploaded on the same day as the serve, cuts out a good portion of the original source pool, preferring to focus just on largely Norm Augustinus, the Ninja: Silent Assassin Footage, the Chrono Trigger anime, Higurashi and much of Moogle's source representation, singling out the CHEEEEEN at a notable moment where Jim Kelly in the blaxploitation film Black Belt Jones(1974) performs a judo chop on another's neck. The line "I'M GONNA KILL YOU LIKE I KILLED YOUR WIFE" is repeated from the serve, and the depiction of Adolf Hitler from Lupin III: The Mystery of Mamo(1978) appears for the first time very briefly. After the brief Gato's Theme interlude from the Chrono Trigger anime is shown, the full song from the original game plays over footage of Charles Gordone as the character "Preacherman" in one of Coonskin(1975)'s live-action segments. The round ends with a brief coda following the THE END title card, with "EE-EE-EE-EE....BURRR-?" over Ninja Silent Assassin footage, immediately followed by a brief clip of Lupin smiling mischievously. A product of his "WMM year" of late 2008 to late 2009, this was the only time that Crash and Moogle shared a direct tennis exchange with each other.
Round 3
"PLAY WITH ME AND EARN SILVER FABRIC", by RAKninja
With the previous 2 rounds being noted for their long-ended runtime, RAKninja posted Round 3 on June 1, 2009, saying "I fixed that, sorry", with a run time of just over a minute. Beginning immediately by mirroring and slowing down the Hitler face, much of the video is dominated by Gato's Theme from Chrono Trigger and the addition of Dr. Rockso from Metalocalypse, which serves to represent and acknowledge the existence of Nuthead, the only other first generation Tennis Staff member who never participated. Like the rounds before it, it continues the usage of CHEEEEEEN from the serve, reversing it and stretching it out for the first time in the match, concluding with "I'M GONNA KILL YOU LIKE I KILLED [COCAAAAAAAINE]". RAK's Round 3 remains today as the earliest video of the match to exist as its original upload. This was the second and final time after their original match that Crash and RAK shared a direct tennis exchange with each other.
Round 4
"Win Silver Tiger; Play Snares Now!!", by theHappyFungus
theHappyFungus' Round 4, uploaded June 21, 2009, features probably the most inscrutable source additions in the match, almost entirely of live band footage both professionally and independently recorded. The previous round is given many simple juxtapositions and is probably the closest the match approaches at this stage to a style more "cutting edge" to the prevalent trends of the time, with quick visual moments, pitch shifting and other faster paced edits including the multiplying and replicating of the Hitler face. A main feature of this round is a british female vocalist speaking to the audience about what sounds like "trying to add to the fucking wheels puuuuuulllsating", before getting all the audience members from London to join in with a shout of "CHEEEEEEEN!" The song "Sweet Road" by Animal Collective underscores both the violent Higurashi sequence and the round's ending, featuring the first-mentioned added source with the rotating THE END added in multiple layers over the top. This was the third and final time after their first complete match and their aborted rematch that Happy and RAK shared a direct tennis exchange with each other.
Round 5
"Orcs Play Silver Snares without a Care", by Emperor Ing
A gleeful energy pervades the course of Emperor Ing's Round 5, uploaded June 24, 2009, as he proceeds to immediately edit over the Hitler face, proclaimed by him as his favorite moment from the previous round (which makes brief reappearances across the entire video), and introduces some of his signature sources into the match. The most significant new addition is the Rankin-Bass adaption of The Hobbit(1977), namely a song from the film which includes the lines:
Sleep will ease your mind,
with the dawn you'll find....problems
At one point the video freeze frames on a frame of Gandalf making what looks to be a perplexed expression, referred to by Ing as the "Gandalf Stare". Also added into the video are mostly unedited clips from the 1985 anime film Space Transformers(which shares an executive producer in the Godfrey Ho Ninja films with Joseph Lai), utilized largely to exploit its legendarily corny English dub ("YES WELL YOU KNOW MY SISTER COMES IN HERE ALMOST EVERY DAY WHATS THE PROOOBLEMM"). This was the second and final time after their original, coincidentally Lord of the Rings themed match that Ing and Happy shared a direct tennis exchange with each other.
Round 6
"The Thumbnail of this Video Only Tells Half the Tale", by RabbitSnore
This video has no existing save or reupload ("lost media"). If it is recovered, let us know!
Rabbit's Round 6, uploaded July 9, 2009, is notable for being edited with his trademark style of picture-in-picture layering, and for introducing Sonic The Hedgehog (OVA), one of Rabbit's signature sources, into the match's pool. Among notable moments are Tails' line "Oh Sonic, thank you!" with the frame proceeding to zoom in on Sonic winking at Tails with loud and distorted audio, along with Tails yelling "You're No HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!" The original upload was viewable until about early 2010, and then able to be viewed unlisted in the original YouChew thread from January 2013 until October 2019, when RabbitSnore's YouTube account was deleted. A saved copy of this round by anyone who has it remains highly sought after to make the match complete once again. This was the second and final time after their original match that Rabbit and Ing shared a direct tennis exchange with each other.
Round 7
"The Video's Thumbnail Tells Tales as James Earl Jones Reads Pi.", by strong414bad
strong414bad's Round 7, originally uploaded July 13, 2009, adds in Hotel Mario and James Earl Jones counting to 10 on Sesame Street, the latter whom, true to the videos title, does proceed to recite 9 digits of pi interspersed throughout the response (3.14159265). CHEEEEEN is heard over a zoom in onto Mario's nose and over a screen-flipping of the "Gandolf Wizard Stare", and the "sleep will ease your mind" song is repeated over the word "problems", increasing in volume to the point where James Earl Jones reciting 2 and 6 is only barely audible. As the second WMM response of the match, much of the editing is simplistic yet effective, with many repetitions, stutters and and drastic speed ups of the previous round that were well received by the other participants. This was the second and final time after their Tennis League 2 match that strong and Rabbit had a direct tennis exchange with each other.
Round 8
"I don't know what Tales this Thumbnail tells", by GameBop
Gamebop's Round 8, uploaded July 16, 2009, serves as the first appearance of the second generation of tennis staff into the match, and marks the round number by duplicating the "8" from the James Earl Jones footage across the screen. Lots of Kukori Es Kotkoda footage is added to the round, including a clip of Kukori next to Kopasznyakú holding a microphone as "Sleep will ease-" is heard. The CHEEEEEN now players over a zoom in shot of James Earl Jones' chin, making for a clever visual pun. (WIP, more to be added soon). This was the third and final time that GameBop and strong had a direct tennis exchange with each other.
Round 9
"Your video's thumbnail tells the story of a duck who's name is Alfred Kwak.", by MycroProcessor
There also exists some "deleted scenes" for this round, albeit with extra editing made after in order to create what became Round 1 of Joltoen vs. Glacoen(2010; a playful, short rematch between MycroProcessor and TheChutley):
Round 10
"Stories Of A Duck Only Bring Up Nothing More Than Happiness", by DaftPunkYoshi
One of the most intense rounds of the entire match, Round 10, uploaded December 12, 2009, indulges greatly in DaftPunkYoshi's now-cemented and legendary mastery of Windows Movie Maker, seeming to one-up even MycroProcessor's contribution in its drastic increase of pace and heavy use of transitions and speed-up clips that were signature to his style at its peak. This is hampered only by it seeming to struggle with a shifting frame rate but is nonetheless captured wonderfully still in its manic audio. The Alfred Kwak SLEEP moment is mirrored and reversed into SLEELS, with the often-traded "clip rearrangement" technique in order to pull off the reverse with its signature WMM stutter. The Home Improvement intro is the only added source into this match, with Tim Allen's "HOOH" and "AAAAUEEEH??" being stuttered to humorous effect. This was the second and final time after their Windows Movie Master match that DPY and Mycro had a direct tennis exchange with each other.
Round 11
"I'VE GOT A HAPPY STORY TO TELL", by RAKninja
Round 11, uploaded May 29, 2010, serves to be the first second response made to the match made by one of its members. It features a much more experimental style compared to RAK's previous contribution, stating in the video's description "I am very rusty." Beginning with a clip from Star Trek: The Original Series of Kirk exclaiming "I'M LOSING COMMAND.....IM LOSING THE ENTERPRISE...", It features RAK's attempt to create a "3d rotating tornado of picture in picture" using the 9's from DaftPunkYoshi's round, and otherwise very minimally editing it between blocks of blank space and the addition of footage from Dolemite(1975)("DOLEMITE MOTHER FUCKER YOU-") The round ends with a clip from the 1995 comedy film The Jerky Boys, where Johnny B. asks Kamal "you think these fucking cocks can hold us?" while holding a rope of linked sausages next to a window. This is insofar the only round of the chain not to include CHEEEEEEN in some way. This was the only time that RAK and DPY shared a direct tennis exchange.
Round 12
"I'VE NEVER HEARD A HAPPY STORY BEFORE", by ChrisGendo
The third generation of staff makes its debut appearance into the match at this point, with ChrisGendo uploading her Round 12 only a day after being promoted, on December 11, 2010. Spawn Spencer from Psych opens the video, exclaiming "YEEEEAAAAAA" with a blue photo filter applied to him, something that would be done directly by fellow staff member NS2 in a similar fashion in "Luck, You Bluffer"(2010) the immediate day after, therefore acting as his indirect representation in this match. As this melts into a strobe, the following video proceeds in a music video fashion set to the Ling Tosite Sigure song "Sergio Echigo"(2004), editing the previous round in what had by then become ChrisGendo's signature style. Her staple of Welcome to the NHK is one of the main added sources featured, along with footage of Gendo Ikari from Neon Genesis Evangelion from which her alias originates. This was the only time that Gendo and RAK shared a direct tennis exchange.
Round 13
"TELL ME THE TENNIS FUCK STORY", by AshcrementVII
Round 14
"The Tennis Fuck Story", by strong414bad
Round 14, originally uploaded October 21, 2013, is the second round to be a second response from an earlier participant in the match, the most recent round to be edited in WMM, and and the final video to date by strong414bad following a brief one-match comeback that year. The video is dominated by the addition of "Bound 2", the final song from the then-newly released album Yeezus(2013) by Kanye West, which plays for the entire duration. Much of the previous round is edited minimally, yet stylistically in WMM as almost a pseudo-music video, adding in very little besides Emperor Ing's famous "ROGAS" reaction image at the first instance of "uh huh honey". After a brief reprisal of the "THE END" title card, the song switches to the section with "I KNOW....YOU'RE TIRED...OF LOVING....OF LOVING WITH NOBODY TO LOOVEE....NOBODY....NO- uh huh honey" accompanied by a large collage of every well known meme shared among the Tennis Staff and Tennis Cafe regulars of old and other images in reference to members of the staff. These include:

- King Harkinian
- "NO ONE WINS AT TENNIS EVER"
- A Youchew post by RAKninja, dated October 12, 2008, reciting the famous "FUCK Man i know, but hey, do u want to watch TV on ur PC" copypasta
- The Thumbnail from RAKninja's "RED WIZARD RONDO: NINJA POWER KILLED LILLY" (from his tennis match with Emperor Ing)
- The ROBOT BUNNY BOOBIES image, taken from a humorous frame of Beast Wars Neo: Super Lifeform Transformers and also the thumbnail from RAKninja's "ENZO'S AFTERNOON HOBBY IS NOW BUNNIE BOOBIES" (his Round 6 with Futures Passed/RobotComics)
- A small image of a Jolteon
- An image of Kukori and Kotkoda
- A Rabbit image that was often posted by RabbitSnore in the very early years of the burgeoning tennis community, usually accompanied by something like "Here's a Rabbit."
- A depiction of RabbitSnore's persona, drawn by Black_Puffin circa 2008
- "GUYS IN NATURE", a meme spawned from RAKninja's "CAPTAIN KAWAII'S SENTRY WATCHES GUYS IN NATURE WITH FRANCIS", his Round 3 in a Doubles match vs. McMANGOS and WowComics from the Doubles Cup I.
- "you found a spiderman" (unknown origin or context)
- a comic page of unknown origin or context
- A very low res frame from Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith containing infamously hilarious english-to-chinese-to-english subtitles
- The POOP TENNIS CAFE image that adorned the OP of every Tennis Café thread from mid 2008 until the YTPMania Café thread in 2018
- A reaction image taken from the animated TV adaption of The Phantom of the Opera(1988), often used by Emperor Ing
- The face of the bunny from the ROBOT BUNNY BOOBIES image superimposed upon a frame of an unknown hentai character, bearing the caption "Now It's a real ejaculation party!"
At the second instance of "uh huh honey...." The text "Love is here", originally taken from the Version 2 intro of Beast Wars Neo: Super Lifeform Transformers and long the old motto of the Tennis Café and Tennis Staff, is shown on screen before the video cuts to black. After a few seconds of silence. CHEEEEEEEEN is heard once more, closing out the video.
Due to YouTube more often than not muting copyrighted material rather than just "claiming" it during the era of its original upload, this round remained nearly 90% muted for years, until it was finally re-uploaded with proper audio restored. This was the only time that strong and Ash shared a direct tennis exchange.
Round 15
"John Lemon's Fuck Stpry", by TheChutley
Round 15, uploaded October 26, 2014, almost four years after TheChutley was first promoted to staff, is a product of her now famous middle period (once referred to by dani_phantump as "Cool Mode") and is thusly edited in her much more humorous, irrelevant and stream-of-conscious driven style from that period. It was also the only time that TheChutley and strong414bad ever shared a direct tennis exchange. Chen makes her actual first on-screen appearance, sliding down the quill of a giant Sandslash to the sound of CHEEEEEEEN before being impaled by another, followed by the text "Loading Chen.... Please Wait" with a screen flipping gif of David Bowie (from his "Heroes"(1977) album cover) that was being used by dani_phantump around this time. Following this, The Ninja: Silent Assassin clip of the phone being answered is redubbed with TheChutley's own voice, with an image of an old woman appearing on the opposite half of the screen, voiced to say:
"YES, UM...HELLO....I WOULD LIKE TO UM, MAKE A COMPLAINT AGAINST THIS UH YOUTUBE POOP...UH TENNIS MATCH, NOW...THE REASON I AM CALLING...IS BECAUSE THIS MATCH, IN PARTICULAR, IS UM...VERY VERY SILLY, AND I WILL HAVE NO MORE OF IT. NOW NOW NOW NOW DON'T TRY TO PERSUADE ME DIFFERENTLY, IVE MADE UP MY MIND AND FROM HERE ON OUT, THIS YOUUU TUUBE POOOP TENNIS MATCH WILL BE EDUCATIVE AND INFORMATIVE. NOW......CUT TO THE NEXT SCENE."
A Cut To The Next Scene is made, showing initially unedited black-and-white footage of "THE BIG SIX FILM HUNT have pleasure in presenting....More Uses For THE FERGUSON TRACTOR" until an extremely loud and distorted "SPAGHETTI" plays over footage of a passing car. After a shot showing a sign advertising "GROUNDSMEN'S RALLY AND DEMONSTRATION OF Ferguson TRACTORS AND IMPLEMENTS" (of which the "APRIL 21st & 22nd" was noted as being an unintentional "21/22" reference from the game Alida(2004), often used between GameBop and MycroProcessor) Chen crashes onto the screen, and after a few seconds of insanity reappears with a set of human teeth, saying in TheChutley's voice "I CAN NEVER DIE". "Love is here." is changed to "Love is her" with a gif of Paper Mario replacing the "e", and is then followed by sequence of images of famous musicians with humorous and often deliberately misleading captions. These include:
- "John Lennon is furbait." (image of John Lennon)
- "John Wetton is fine." (image of Alex Lifeson)
- John Fogerty is funny." (image of Kurt Cobain)
- "Jon Anderson is furious." (image of Robert Plant)
Also added in the video is "Monica" by The Kinks (very beginning), "Rain" and "Tell Me What You See" by The Beatles, "Astronomy Domine" by Pink Floyd (played over just "here." on screen) along with several other song snippets and several seemingly random and goofy images and gifs. The Silly Symphony short The Wise Old Hen(1934) is added, with a rhythmic clip repeated with the caption "ytpmv" over the video. After a clip of TheChutley's voice saying "Whatcha doin at the club ON A THURSDAY", CHEEEEEEN is heard over a drawing of a Slyveon, interspersed with TheChutley's voice going "UUUUUUUUUUUUUU" with a 8^( face superimposed over it.
Round 16
"Michael Jacksonville's Funk Narrative", by TheFXexpert
This was the last round produced during the YouChew era, and currently the only time that FX and TheChutley have shared a direct tennis exchange.
Round 17
"NOW IT'S TIME TO GET FUNKY", by mrdoognoog
Round 17, uploaded March 30, 2020, was the first round of the 5th generation of tennis staff. mrdoognoog went for a much more "maximalist" approach, adding literally anything and everything that was relevant to the previous round, along with many things that were prominent to doog's works. It is over five minutes long, the longest round until dani_phantump's round immediately after.
CHENNN is notably distorted and not in its complete form as of other rounds.
mrdoognoog has mentioned he is planning a "remaster" of the round to improve the pace and some audio errors throughout, without removing any existing ideas. This has been somewhat controversial, because it goes against the idea of just letting imperfections be and moving on. This is currently the only time that doog and FX have shared a direct tennis exchange.
Round 18
"The Funk of Christ, Or the Beat of Kurosawa's Island of Magical Tennis Dreams" by dani_phantump
Round 18, uploaded April 2, 2020, ended up as the longest round of the entire match, surpassing the first two rounds by over a full minute. It was the second time that dani and doog had shared a direct tennis exchange, occurring concurrently with the early stages of their separate match.
