Kdenlive, short for KDE Non-Linear Video Editor is a free and open source video editor made primarily for Linux by the KDE community, primarily known for their work on the Plasma desktop environment.[1] It is based on the MLT framework, which was also used to create Shotcut, Flowblade and many others.[2]

Kdenlive can also be used on Windows, macOS, and FreeBSD operating systems.

Usage

kdenlive 25.04.3-1 in action.

Kdenlive works similarly to other MLT-based NLE editors.

Changing Speed

While kdenlive can change footage speed, it is a bit more intricate of a process than other editors:

  • Go to the project bin and right click the footage.
  • Select "Clip Jobs" -> "Duplicate Clip with Speed Change".
  • Set the new speed to the desired value. Set to negative for reverse.
  • This will create a new clip with a ".mlt" extension in your project bin. Replace the old footage with the updated one to use it.[3]

Alternatively, there exists a graph editor for time remapping that can be accessed by right clicking the footage, enabling Time Remapping, then modifying it to your heart's content in the Time Remapping panel.

Effects

Kdenlive uses frei0r as its effect package.
