Crash2991 first came up with the variant of Wildcard tennis in the Tennis Cafe thread on January 31, 2008, only a few days after the thread had been created by RabbitSnore. Rabbit himself had expressed initial interest in such a tennis variant at the time. With both players in the months since becoming wrapped up in both other tennis matches and other activities such as Rabbit's subsequent work as an Admin of the post-Conrad Slater YouChew forums, the prospect of them playing a match with each other was put on hold, and Crash would periodically bring up the possibility of a Wildcard match in the Cafe thread, taking the occasional step to refine the rules of how Wildcard tennis would work. In his initial draft, Round restrictions would be applied to every rotation after the initial one, rather than each round including the serve. RabbitSnore would return to the Cafe after a period of inactivity and busyness with real life in October 2008, reflecting on how long its been (a matter of months) since he was able to engage with tennis entirely. This became the impetus for Rabbit and Crash, who had now become considerably old friends at this point, to finally take each other on in a proper tennis match, and it was here that the final official rules for Wildcard Tennis were ironed out between the two: for each Round, the opposing player would give a restriction to the other, which would be traded back and forth for however many rounds.

Wildcard Tennis is a special type of tennis that adds "wildcards" - special restrictions - to each round. Generally, these wildcards would be different per round, chosen by the player who just finished to give to their opponent alongside their completed work. These restrictions could go from simple (like an entirely monochrome video) to extreme (like forcing you to only use one effect)!

Some wildcard matches will also stack restrictions on top of each other, making it harder and harder to make your next video. You have to be careful what you recommend!

Notable Matches

  • RabbitSnore vs. Crash2991(2008), the first match to be played under this variant
  • Moogle vs. RabbitSnore(2009), a Tennis Season match of the Wildcard variant where both players activated the "Forever Wild" ablity, meaning each round had three conditions applied to it.
  • JazzDanceForChildren + TangerineImpz vs. RAKninja + Crash2991(2009), a Tennis Season Doubles match given Wildcard rules by the latter two players.
  • GameBop vs. Combuskenisawesome(2009), a Tennis Season Wildcard match known for having very extreme restrictions for the time.
  • The Tennis League 5 had wildcard matches as one of its special match types. VidTens443 vs. dani_phantump(2019) used the Wildcard variant to apply "Oblique Strategies" conditions to rounds.

    • VEN0M's wildcard chain
