A Filetype is the type of file you are working with. This can be literally anything - photos, videos, text, movies, etc. Also known as containers.

ASF
ASF Stands for Advanced Streaming Format, a proprietary format made by Microsoft.
WMV
The most commonly used ASF format, for video files.
Image Types
PNG
APNG
JPG/JPEG
GIF
WEBP
HEIF
HEIF files short for High Efficiency Image Format are a format commonly used in Apple products, but not much anywhere else. As a result, nearly nothing supports them
Project Files
PSD
The project file format for Photoshop. Many other photo editing programs, like GIMP for example, can also open them (but may not have 100% compatibility). They can also be opened in Premiere and After Effects.
VEG
The project file format for Vegas. This is where the "VEG Replacing" term in Recycling comes from, due to how simple Vegas makes it to do such a thing.
PRPROJ
The project file format for Premiere Pro.
AEP
The project file format for After Effects.
XCF
The project file format for GIMP.
